GameOn! Sports Camp Visit

This 7 week summer camp focuses on the promoting and exposing sports to girls at a young age. The girls ranging in age from kindergarten to eighth grade listened as two of their favorite professional athletes encouraged them to play sports regardless of barriers they may face one day. Prince and Young shared stories of how they became WNBA athletes and the commitment and practice it takes.

After Tamera and Epiphanny shared their background they answered questions from the campers including “Did they ever play other sports growing up” in which Tamera replied she played both soccer and volleyball. But once she reached high school she realized basketball was her passion and decided to pursue this sport in spite of her critics. When Epiphanny was asked what made her want to play, she shared the story of how she wanted to prove her male cousin wrong when he stated a girl could never beat him. And when asked how long they would play for the Sky they stated, however long their bodies let them.

Following the discussion the group headed to the gym to get some tips on ball handling, shooting and the pick and roll concept. The event concluded with both Epiphanny and Tamera signing autographs and accepting artwork and drawings from their young fans. The camp participants will now join us at Allstate Arena for Camp Day on July 9 where they are sure to cheer the loudest for Piph and T!

The most important message the two athletes shared with these young girls was an assurance that they could be just as great one day and achieve whatever they dream on with hard work and commitment. With programs like Game On! Sports Camp 4 Girls they are ensuring there will be many future generations of Sky fans by fostering the passion for women in sports.
