Candice Duprees Team USA Training Camp Blog - Day 10
So today was the start of our three game tournament. Our first game was against a team from Prague. I woke up this morning and decided that I was going to skip breakfast. It probably wasn't going to be worth the trip downstairs anyway, if you remember how uneventful it was last time. The bus left for shootaround at 9:30. We had a chance to get a lot of shots up, review some of our plays and go over what our pre-game warm-up was going to be. After shoot around I was starving, I’m sure it had a lot to do with skipping my breakfast and couldn't wait for the pre-game meal, so I decided to be a fat girl and order an omelet and some freshly squeezed orange juice!! Mind you, I only had to wait about an hour for our pre-game meal, but I just couldn't do it!! When I get hungry, I have got to eat, I’m sure many of you can relate.
I always like to get a nap in on game days, so after pre-game I went back to my room to lay down for about an hour and a half. As I was on the elevator heading upstairs I kept hoping that the cleaning lady wasn't going to be in my room. I got off the elevator and turned the corner and sure enough she was there!! By the time she finished cleaning, my nap had now been cut to an hour, so made the most of the time I had left. Before I knew it, it was time to get up and get ready for the game.
Departure time for the game was 3:30. We headed over to the gym and the only thing I kept thinking about was how much I was going to play, and how I needed to make the most of the minutes that I was going to get. As we got to the gym I began mentally preparing myself. I can't speak for anyone else on the team but warm-ups before the game seemed like they took an eternity. Once the buzzer at the end of warm-ups sounded everyone looked and sounded like they were ready to go, I know I was.
The starters started off the game really well. We were getting easy looks inside and taking just about any shot we wanted to take. Toward the end of the first quarter I hear coach call my name to sub into the game. I didn't do anything spectacular my first time out; grabbed a few offensive rebounds, and made sure that I was doing what needed to be done on defense.
As the game progressed I got a little more comfortable. My next time out on the court I was a little more aggressive on offense. Considering it was our first time playing together, we did really well. I think the final score was 100-81...I think. The one thing that we need to work on the most is defense. But all in all it wasn't too bad. I ended up scoring eight points in 12 minutes on 3-of-6 shooting and I made the only two free throws I attempted, which is always good.
After our game we had to watch the first half of the Sopron and UMMC game. Then it was back to the hotel for dinner. We all ate and chit-chatted and eventually called it a night. I look forward to our game tomorrow. Based upon what I saw today, we should do just fine.
