The 2013 season started with a party and finished with the Sky making history. Below is a timeline of Sky highlights from the first two months of the season.

April 15
The Chicago Sky selected Elena Delle Donne with the second overall pick of the 2013 WNBA Draft. This marked the first year the WNBA draft was nationally televised on ESPN2. Delle Donne arrived as a four time All-American from the University of Delaware and the fifth all-time leading scorer in NCAA women’s basketball history. Sky fans in Chicago gathered at Theory Sports Bar for our Official Draft Party to watch the historic moment and the cheers could be heard down the street once the draft pick was announced. April 30
Tree Rollins joined the Chicago Sky as an assistant coach. The former NBA player served as a coach in the NBA, WNBA, NBA D-League, and ABL before joining the Sky. Rollins used his knowledge to help the “bigs” throughout the season, giving the Sky strength in the paint.

May 2
Elena Delle Donne met Chicago. Delle Donne was welcomed in a press conference at the Hancock Observatory attended by members of the Chicago media. Delle Donne spent the day roaming around the city, getting to know its beautiful sights and attractions. She later went to a Chicago Bulls game to show her support for her fellow Chicago hoopers. May 9
The Sky hosted Media Day, welcoming all of Chicago media to meet the coaches and 2013 roster. The team also took photos and spent the afternoon filming their introduction video that fans saw before every home game. View the media day photo gallery and video.

May 15
The Chicago Sky turned attention to violence prevention during the 2013 season. The Sky worked with the Cook County Sheriff’s Department on events throughout the season with a focus on helping spread the message about reducing violence in the Chicagoland area.

The “Game Plan For Peace” on May 15 was the Sky’s preseason opener held at Chicago State University. Before the game, a press conference was held to highlight the Sky’s violence prevention initiative. Over 1,000 children from Curtis Elementary, Buckingham Elementary, Sandridge Elementary and other Chicago Public Schools took part in an anti-violence presentation and got to watch the Sky defeat the New York Liberty. May 22
The Chicago Sky and its foundation, Sky Cares, joined the Greater Food Depository (GCFD) to serve food to 100 Chicago children. The GCFD provides nutrition food to children and their families at 11 school-based pantries. Click here to view the video.

May 27
The Chicago Sky took home a 102-80 victory on opening night over the Phoenix Mercury in a nationally televised game on ESPN2. Delle Donne had 22 points, 8 rebounds and 4 blocks in her WNBA debut. This was the third best rookie debut in WNBA history. The Sky broke the franchise record for points in a regulation game (102) and points in a quarter (39 in 2nd quarter). May 31
The Chicago Sky defeated the Connecticut Sun 86-75 in the 2013 home opener at Allstate Arena. Sylvia Fowles finished with 24 points and a career high 22 rebounds. This marked the first 20-20 performance in Sky history. Her 24 points also marked the highest point total in a Sky home opener. Click here to view the video.
