American Heart Association Event

On the morning of February 28, 2007, Sky forward Amanda Lassiter and Sky Guy, along with some of the Chicago Sky staff, visited Smyth School in Chicago. They spent time with the students and staff for a Black History Month Reading Time Out.

Members of the Sky staff explained the importance of reading and how it expands your imagination, which was followed by Lassiter speaking about the importance of Black History Month. Black History Month is a four week celebration to honor and learn about the important figures in black history.

Lassiter presented the book Wilma Unlimited, which is a story about how Wilma Rudolph became the world’s fastest woman. She paved the way for African American athletes, and in her honor, her town put on their first racially integrated parade. Some important lessons that were learned were overcoming challenges, Wilma’s persistence, and Wilma’s achievements both on and off the track.

Following the presentation, students were allowed to ask Lassiter questions. A few lucky students won Sky t- shirts autographed by Lassiter, and every student received Sky goodie-bags.
