IN to the SKY
Training Camp Begins

Sky Training camp started today at the Sachs Rec Center in Deerfield, and from the moment the players stepped on the court, it was clear that there was a newfound intensity permeating the air.
There was not going to be any fooling around at the 2012 training camp. The girls have come to play - play hard - and play physical.
Sylvia Fowles and Epiphanny Prince appear to be at the top of their games and pushed the action most of the morning.
Courtney Vandersloot looks more athletic and added some mental toughness following her experience with EuroCup basketball.
Carolyn Swords is almost unrecognizable as she transformed herself in the offseason to add more quickness and endurance to her game. Not surprisingly her workout regimen involves running in sand. At six-foot-six, she won’t be hard to miss sprinting on a beach near you.
Lindsay Wisdom-Hylton looks singularly focused as she had her game face on throughout the morning, playing with a lot of heart and winning many loose balls.
But what is really different about the 2012 Sky are the new faces on the team, and it was clear they all bring a lot of talent to Chicago.
Ruth Riley, the proven veteran from San Antonio, picked up the drills quickly and took a leadership role right from the start. She also stretched the defense hitting bombs you wouldn’t expect from the woman who just crushed you with a nasty pick only moments before.
Ticha Penicheiro, one of the league’s all-time greats, has come into camp in top shape and her size at the point guard position gives this creative passer terrific angles to work her magic.
Draft picks Shey Peddy and Sydney Carter showed they had the speed to compete at the next level and looked fairly comfortable as they adjust to the pro game.
Rookie Lykendra Johnson made her presence felt as she demonstrated she had athleticism to go with her impressive size competing in the post.
Former Depaul star Felicia Chester-Wootton showed nice footwork in the paint on both sides of the ball and looks like she will put up a good challenge for a low post position.
And then there’s Swin Cash. Wow! Sky fans are in for a treat this season as she looks ready to dominate the Eastern Conference with her silky smooth jumper and exceptional court vision. Seeing Swin and Syl run the court together has this reporter getting goose bumps thinking about what this team can accomplish.
And camp is going to get even more competitive shortly as four Sky players haven’t suited up yet. Tamera Young, Shay Murphy and Le’coe Willingham will arrive in the next few days. Sonja Petrovic injured her hand in a Russian game last week and is not expected to play this week.
