  • Attendance at tonight’s game: 3,407
  • The Sky netted a much needed win and ended a five-game losing streak to improve to 4-9 on the season. It was the first home win against the Shock in franchise history.
  • The Shock is 6-0 at home this season, and falls to 5-5 on the road with the loss.
  • Sky center Sylvia Fowles is still on the injured reserve list.
  • Tonight was the first of three meetings this season between the teams.
  • For the second game in a row, the Sky faced a 2007 finals participant. Thursday night’s game was an 89-79 loss to the defending champions, the Phoenix Mercury. The Mercury defeated the Shock, the 2006 champs, 3-2 in the WNBA’s highest attended finals series of all-time.
  • Brooke Wyckoff started for the second straight game, replacing mainstay Armintie Price.

  • KEY STATS OF THE NIGHT

  • The Sky countered a tightly-packed Shock zone by hitting 54.5% of its three-point attempts, its 2nd highest 3-point percentage of the season.
  • The Sky was 22-27 from the charity stripe, good for 81.5%, a season high.
  • A stifling defensive effort held the Shock to only 59 points, the team’s season low, on 35.1%shooting from the field. Both were season lows for Sky opponents.
  • Four Sky starters scored in double figures: Candice Dupree with a team-high 18, Dominique Canty and Jia Perkins each with 14 and Chasity Melvin with 10.
  • Fresh on the heels of a dominating rebounding performance against Phoenix, the Sky once again out-rebounded its opponent, 36-28.
  • The Sky was able to overcome ice-cold shooting in the third quarter (3-16 from the field) by attacking the rim and going 6-6 from the free throw line.

  • KEY RUN OF THE NIGHT

  • The Sky took control early with a 10-0 second quarter run that stretched the lead from five to 15 in a matter of three minutes. Candice Dupree and Chasity Melvin both had four points during the run.

  • SKY-LIGHTS

  • With her first made free throw tonight, Jia Perkins broke a 4-year old WNBA record for consecutive free throws without a miss. She has made 34 consecutive free throws. The previous record was 28, set by LaToya Thomas of San Antonio in 2004.
  • Perkins continued to prove that since the June 1st game against Connecticut, two things are nearly automatic: she’ll score in double figures and she’ll make her free throws. That game started a 10-game streak that she continued tonight with 14 points. She was also 6-6 from the line, which improves her to 39-41 since June 1.
  • After setting career highs in rebounds (15) and offensive rebounds (10) against the Phoenix Mercury, Chasity Melvin was at it again, tying for the team lead with 8 rebounds and a season-high 5 assists. She also grabbed the 1,000th defensive rebound of her WNBA career.
  • Brooke Wyckoff is adapting well to her new starting role. After setting her season high for assists with 9 Thursday against Phoenix, tonight she grabbed a season-high 7 rebounds.
  • In addition to her four assists, Dominique Canty set a season high with 6 made field goals. The veteran also hit her first three-pointer of the season, an exclamation point to the Sky win as time ran out on the game clock.
  • Rookie Quianna Chaney began to fulfill her promise as a long-range shooter. She made 2-5 from outside the arc, one from NBA range, while scoring a season-high 8 points.

  • SHOCK NOTES

  • Frustrations boiled over with 7:54 remaining in the fourth quarter as veteran Katie Smith picked up two quick technical fouls and was ejected for the ninth time in her career. The Shock’s leading scorer was held to seven points, her lowest output since May 25 against the New York Liberty.
  • Newly-acquired guard Shay Murphy (6/22 from Minnesota for LaToya Thomas) led the way for the Shock, with a season-high 13 points on 4-5 shooting, 2-3 from deep. The 13 points were one short of her career high.
  • Rookie Alexis Hornbuckle had one of her best games of the season with 11 points, one shy of her season high, off the bench. She also contributed four assists, tying her season high.
  • The Shock starters only totaled 21 points in the game, while the bench players scored 38. Second leading-scorer Deanna Nolan managed to score only 4 points and was held below double digits for the first time this season. She did not score her first field goal until 3:44 in the second quarter. Just over a week ago, she scored 44 points in a game against Minnesota.

  • NEXT PRACTICE: Monday, 10-12:00 p.m. at Attack Athletics.
NEXT GAME: The Sky goes back on the road against the Minnesota Lynx on Tuesday, July 1, tip-off at 7pm CDT.

    SKY QUOTES
    Head Coach Steven Key
    On tonight’s win:
“We are excited...you can’t help but be excited when four of five starters get double figures. They did a great job tonight, but I just continue to encourage them to stay on defense and not give up easy shots.”

    On togetherness of team:
“It seemed that collectively as a team we were on the same page. Everyone did a great job of rebounding and communicating on defense, which is something that we were having problems with.”

    On team motivation:
“I do believe they are realizing that we are a good team and that they can win a lot more games than our record shows. Even when they made mistakes, it was good to know that their teammates had their backs.”

    On Brooke Wyckoff’s playing:
“Putting Brooke at the 3 position helped to bring the running, jumping, defending, and rebounding that we were used to seeing from her. Hopefully, she will continue to embrace the role we have given her.”

    #44 Chasity Melvin
    On tonight’s win:
“I am speechless. It feels extremely good to get this win and I’m extremely proud of my team, but we have to continue to build off of this win.”

On Thursday’s performance versus tonight’s performance:
“We talked more on defense and we were better prepared. I don’t think Detroit was ready for that. We helped each other on every play and we made everybody try to make tough shots.”

On upcoming 3- game road trip:
“We beat a really good and top-ranked team, so that gives us a lot of confidence. Even with the losing streak, we came to every game with a lot of confidence. Tonight we put it all together, so hopefully this will give us the extra push we need for the next games.”

    #21 Brooke Wyckoff
On being a spark for the team:
“We all just go out and do whatever we have to do. This is a really good team – when our name is called we go out there work hard; if not, we are on the bench cheering.”

    On the Sky’s defense:
“That is what we were saying early that really won the game was the defense and the rebounding and I think that tonight everything was clicking. You know, obviously they don’t play as fast-paced as phoenix. They’re always a defensive challenge. They’re a really big team and we had a very specific game plan. Defend them inside and we executed that tonight.”

    On the Sky’s losing streak:
“It is so frustrating. The good thing is that you have game after game, and you can get another try, but it’s hard to just keep your head up. That is the good and bad thing about this league is that you get another try and if you can stay positive and come out with as much energy every night, one of them is definitely going to go your way.”

    On the win over Detroit:
“Yea, they are a great team. They are an amazing team so it feels good and any win feels good but just to beat a very very talented winning team is definitely nice.”

    SHOCK QUOTES
    Head Coach Bill Laimbeer
On being 6-0 at home, yet struggling on the road at 5-5:
“We played some good teams on the road. Tonight, well, they have lost 5 in a row, but we didn’t come with the attitude to win the basketball game. We just came to play a basketball game and it showed.”

On starters not getting going offensively, how expect to see change tomorrow night vs. Atlanta:
“The only change I’m expecting is them to come with a better attitude and that’s what we are looking for.”

    On Katie Smith’s ejection:
“She gets very frustrated when she gets T’d up and gets no calls. I was all for her ejection tonight and I think it’s about time she starts standing up for herself.”

    #14 Deanna Nolan
On Sky’s defense making it tough to run offense:
“It wasn’t their defense at all, it was just us missing shots. And when the game went on they just weren’t falling tonight. It wasn’t their defense.”

On improvements for next game versus Atlanta:
“Really just bringing much more energy. We are playing against a team that hasn’t won a game, so they don’t know anything but to play hard. So we just have to bring the energy and start the game.”
