For the Sky, Its All About Going Green

CHICAGO, July 7, 2009 – The Chicago Sky tips off their 2009 Go Green week on Thursday July 9th by teaming up with AthletiCo to host a park clean up at Garibaldi Park - 1520 W. Polk St. from 12:30-2:30p.m.

Fans are invited to join the Sky’s K.B. Sharp, Sky staff, and members of Green Urbanism to remove trash and lay mulch as an extension of the WNBA’s Go Green week. AthletiCo will provide one game ticket to those fans who participate to attend the Sky’s Go Green game on July 10th at the UIC Pavilion at 7:30p.m. against the Indiana Fever. Green Urbanism is a group of students and adults from of the Chicago Public School who inform others on ways to be environmentally conscious in their day-to-day lives.

The Sky will Go Green in a number of ways on July 10th including handing out tree seeds to the first 1,000 fans at the game. The seeds are provided by America the Beautiful Fund which is a national non-profit organization that protects the natural and historic beauty of America while encouraging volunteer citizen’s efforts.

Citizens Utility Board will also provide an energy efficient light bulb to fans in attendance as they exit the UIC Pavilion. The money-saving Compact Fluorescent Light bulbs can save up to $30 over the lifetime of each bulb, while slashing energy consumption by 66% less than the standard incandescent bulb.

In addition, Spalding will sponsor an online auction for the duration of Green Week on WNBA.com featuring Spalding basketballs made of forty percent recycled materials and autographed by WNBA players including Sylvia Fowles. All proceeds will go to the Natural Resources Defense Council.
