Newton Traded For 10th Overall Pick

The Chicago Sky traded guard Chelsea Newton and the 21st pick in the 2007 draft to Sacramento for the 10th pick in the 2007 draft.

Newton was selected by the Sacramento Monarchs in the second round (22nd overall) of the 2005 WNBA Draft. She helped lead Sacramento to their first WNBA Championship while starting in all 34 games and all 8 playoff games for the Monarchs as a rookie.

In November of 2005, the Chicago Sky selected Newton in the WNBA Expansion Draft. In the 2006 season, Newton started 11 games for the Sky while averaging 6.5 ppg, 2.1 apg, and ranking 12th in the WNBA in steals per turnover (.9).

“We have great affection for Chelsea and will miss her," said Sky CEO Margaret Stender. "She is a terrific young player who has a bright future in this League. With the Currie and Canty acquisitions plus the core from 2006, the Sky has many guards. This trade gives us more flexibility. Additionally, we wanted Chelsea to go to a team where she could be successful. She played a significant role in the Monarch Championship season and they were anxious to have her back. As much as we will miss Chelsea...it is a WIN for all concerned."

The Sky will have the 3rd, 10th, and 20th picks in this year’s Rookie Draft being aired on ESPN2 on April 4th at noon.
