Candice’s All-Star Experience
Candice is one of four second year players on the All-Star team this year, and the only one on the East team. Other second year players on the West team include Seimone Augustus of the Minnesota Lynx, Cappie Pondexter of the Phoenix Mercury and Sophia Young of the San Antonio Silvers Stars (named to replace injured Rebekkah Brunson). There are no rookies on this year's All-Star Team.
In a team practice at a refurbished Boys & Girls Club court in Washington, DC, East Team Head Coach Bill Laimbeer had the starters and subs compete in shooting contests. Much to the delight of the crowd, the subs won all but one of them.
In pre-game interviews, a reporter told her that two different players had called her the "Tim Duncan of the WNBA.¨ Candice replied, "I've heard it before, but hearing it from my peers makes it sound better."
When asked to name the best player in the WNBA right now, Candice said Seattle's Lauren Jackson. Best defensive player: Tamika Catchings.
Candice scored 8 points on 4-of-5 shooting, had 4 rebounds and 1 steal in 13:38 minutes of play. She played more minutes than starters Kara Braxton and Anna DeForge, and reserve Tammy Sutton-Brown.
Detroit Assistant Coach Cheryl Reeve said that during the game, WNBA great Dawn Staley, who was Candice’s coach at Temple, kept signaling the East coaches to put Candice in by holding up four fingers (Candice’s jersey number).
In the locker room after the game, the East team players laid their All-Star jerseys in a line on the floor and autographed them for each other.
Candice’s post-game quotes:
On what Laimbeer said to the team before the game: “Go out, have fun and beat the West.”
On Laimbeer: “He was pretty mellow from what I’ve seen in previous games. Bill is a lot of fun – he’s a player’s coach.”
On her two shots to end the first half, both on passes from Alana Beard: “Alana sees the floor really well.”
On whether it’s hard to play with players you don’t normally play with: “These players are the best of the best; they’re easy to work with.”
On the high point of the weekend: “We won.”
On the close game: “We were definitely competing. We were having fun at first, but then we were really trying to win.”
On the sell-out game: “I’ve never played in front of this big of a crowd before.”
On whether she was satisfied with the number of minutes she played: “I know there are older players here, so my minutes were fine. I hope to play in many more All-Star games.”
