The Downers Grove North Girl’s varsity basketball team completed this season with a 25-4 record. This marks the most wins by a girl’s varsity team in school history. Downers Grove North also won the West Suburban Silver conference championship for the first time in 35 years. The team also found success at tournaments this season, placing second in the Glenbard East Thanksgiving tournament and third in the Wheaton North Holiday Tournament capping off a remarkable year on the court.

Basketball is not the only focus for this team that has regularly supported their local community by volunteering as coaches and mentors for local youth basketball camps and leagues. Through teaching young children the fundamentals of basketball the team was able to perfect their own skills while helping those younger than them.

Team members also participate in organizations such as PADS, Youth Leadership programs within their school, Feed My Starving Children and The Salvation Army. The girls like to work together to give back to their community and they believe it also strengthens their teamwork on the court.

As a Chicago Sky “High School Team of the Week” award winner, Downers Grove North High School is invited to enjoy a Chicago Sky game, where they will have the opportunity to watch the world’s best female basketball players. During the game, they will be honored on court.

All teams that compete in IHSA 1A, 2A, 3A or 4A competitions are eligible to win a weekly honor. Nominations from parents, coaches, school faculty members and players are welcome and should be completed on the Chicago Sky website through March 19.

At the end of the 10-week program each weekly winning team will be entered to win the “High School Team of the Year” award for 2014. The winner, determined through online voting, will be announced at halftime at a 2014 Chicago Sky game.
