River Ridge/Scales Mound Co-op “High School Team of the Week”

The River Ridge/Scales Mound Co-op team was formed in 1990-1991 from two small high schools – River Ridge and Scales Mound. The co-op created a way for high school girls to compete in a conference as well as at regional and state levels. These two schools, rivals in every other sport, have come together on the basketball court.

During this 2013-2014 season the team has posted a 13-5 record and currently sits at 4-1 in conference play. They are driving hard to achieve their goal of a second appearance in the 1A State Championship.

The River Ridge/Scales Mound varsity basketball team members are also driven off the court. All of the girls take time to mentor younger basketball players in the team’s kindergarten to 5th grade basketball programs. They also spend time during the summers coaching younger girls at camps and clinics. Members of the team also belong to various church groups, National Honor Society and organizations such as Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) and 4H.

Now, instead of continuing as rivals, the River Ridge/Scales Mound girl’s basketball team has found success and demonstrated unity in basketball and their surrounding communities.

As a Chicago Sky “High School Team of the Week” award winner, River Ridge/Scales Mound is invited to enjoy a Chicago Sky game, where they will have the opportunity to watch the world’s best female basketball players. During the game, they will be honored on court.

All teams that compete in IHSA 1A, 2A, 3A or 4A competitions are eligible to win a weekly honor. Nominations from parents, coaches, school faculty members and players are welcome and should be completed on the Chicago Sky website (www.chicagosky.net) through March 12.

At the end of the 10-week program each weekly winning team will be entered to win the “High School Team of the Year” award for 2014. The winner, determined through online voting, will be announced at halftime at a 2014 Chicago Sky game.
