Installment One
Getting to build a team from scratch is a dream come true for any coach. After months of research and planning that dream is starting to take shape with the expansion draft.

Since May, I have watched film on every WNBA team and every WNBA player; I have probably watched more film in that time than Roger Ebert! Next week’s expansion draft will provide the foundation of the Chicago Sky, although it is just one piece in the puzzle. There’s a free-agent draft this winter and a college draft in spring to complete the roster. So many drafts, so little time!

When I watch game film I look for style of play and how a player responds to tough situations, how they move, their specific skills. I want to see them play defense and run, run, run. Stats are one barometer, but I want players who not only look smart and play smart, I want players who are tenacious and versatile; those are qualities that don’t show up on a stat sheet. And off the court is important to me too; I want players who are all about winning when it comes to connecting to the community and to our fans.

Check back in with us next Wednesday, November 16 to meet the first players of the Chicago Sky.

Ready. Set. Soar.
