If this isn’t the most exciting time for basketball, I don’t know what is!!
Both the women’s and men’s college tournaments are going on, boys high school action is wrapping up, the NBA is playing and we’re making news here in our office every day!
I will be at the women’s regionals in Rosemont and West Lafayette, Ind., scouting for the college draft and when I’m not at a game I will be watching some college game being played somewhere on some TV! I can’t get enough.
Meanwhile, I continue to keep the computer humming keeping track of all our players who are still going strong in Europe. Bernadette Ngoyisa, Elaine Powell and Jia Perkins are all having really good seasons. Stacey Lovelace has finished her season in Israel and is back home in Detroit for some R and R before she starts her Sky season. She’s been playing straight through and could really use a little time off. Of course, chasing a 2-year-old around the house is probably all she needs to stay in shape. Stacey Dales and Brooke Wyckoff continue to work out here with assistant Coach Steve Key, but Stacey D’s ESPN college schedule is now keeping her really busy.
In case you think that putting a basketball team on the court is all about basketball, we had mascot tryouts last week over at the UIC Pavilion. We had help from Dave Raymond, the Phillie Fanatic, who is now a mascot consultant and it turned out to be a lot of fun. (Great coverage in the Trib’s RedEye, too.) We had our three finalists come in to strut their stuff while Dave yelled out emotions they had to play to, changed the music they were dancing to, and threw out props for improv. This was a far cry from the time I did this in the CBA when we attracted candidates who had better not quit the day job. And I enjoyed getting to dance to Cotton-Eyed Joe with big furry animals.
