Well, if you thought you enjoyed WNBA games before, wait until you see the new game this summer. The WNBA recently approved three rule changes for the 2006 season that will affect what you see on the court and should make the game even more fun for the fans.

The changes include a four-quarter format, a 24-second shot clock and eliminating jump balls after the opening tip. The modifications, which were recommended by the WNBA Competition Committee are really positive changes and will bring the game closer to NBA and international rules.

The most noticeable change will be the four 10-minute quarters instead of the previous two 20-minute halves. This will mean a lot more coaching and strategizing will be going on at the end of the period when we try to manipulate the clock and make plays. I like this change as this is what I am used to from my many years in the NBA.

The next big change is the 24-second shot clock, which replaces the 30-second clock. This is another good move as it will speed up the play and increase the scoring, both of which are sure to make fans happy. The reduced shot clock will mean less time to develop a play and get into offensive sets, but I think that if you want the game to grow you’ve got to push the players.

The last change means no jump balls to begin the second, third and fourth quarter. The winner of the opening tip will receive the ball out of bounds at the start of the fourth quarter. The loser of the opening tip will have possession at the beginning of the second and third quarters. I like this change, too, because too often who gets the tip depends on how good the ref’s toss up is. When you’ve got someone small in between two tall people, it’s hard to throw the ball up straight and the tip can just go to the player who had the ball thrown in her direction. I still like using the jump ball on a tie-up, not like the college game where they award alternate possessions.

You should enjoy all of these changes, which will make the game faster and more exciting and also are reflections of the increasing talent level of the players and their increased abilities on the court.

Ready. Set. Soar.
