I’m happy to be able to report that the coaching staff is complete. Steve Key has joined us as Assistant Coach after spending nearly 15 years playing professional basketball and coaching in Europe.

Steve, at 6’4”, is a former point guard for Boston University; where he played for Coach Mike Jarvis from 1986-1990. After playing one season with the CBA on the now defunct San Jose Jammers, Steve took his game overseas and played for several leagues throughout Germany and Austria.

Steve retired from playing basketball three years ago and took over as head coach for the Dusseldorf Magics in Dusseldorf, Germany, a Professional Division Two men’s basketball league. Steve led the team to a 5th place finish in the first year and to a3rd place finish in the next two seasons.

Not only does Steve have a great demeanor and attitude that will mesh well with our players, but his knowledge of the European game and his contacts there will help us a lot with our scouting. He’s also used to wearing many hats as a European head coach where he had to function as the assistant coach, scout, recruiter and sometimes the housing locater for the players. That will come in handy here too as we continue building our franchise.

I’ve had the pleasure of knowing Steve for 16 years; during his short stints in the summer off seasons he worked for me at my Basketball School in the Boston area. He and I share the same philosophy of playing hard and playing smart. Steve and our new Head Athletic Trainer Georgia Fischer are already hard at work so things will be in place when the players start arriving.

Georgia is busy looking at player housing (as well as housing for herself), ordering equipment and preparing the training facility for the team. Steve is keeping pace with her, learning about the players we have drafted and helping me scout for the free agent signing period in February and the college draft in April.

Steve’s already found a great place to live, walking distance from the office, and luckily he arrived here with a winter coat and gloves.

Ready. Set. Soar.
