I was really excited to see Georgia Fischer our new Head Athletic Trainer and Director of Basketball Operations, walk through the door Monday morning.
Georgia has 7 years of WNBA experience, most recently with the Connecticut Sun, but wanted to come home to Chicago to be close to her family. The majority of her six siblings live in the area and her mom is only a toll road away in Rockford. (We’ll get her set up with an I-PASS, which will also come in handy as she finds her way to the Aurora outlet mall).
Georgia is a University of Illinois grad, with a degree in kinesiology, and is excited to be back in time for the Illini basketball season; she couldn’t get a full plate of orange and blue on the East Coast. Georgia worked as an assistant trainer at Illinois and says it was one of the best times of her life. To add to her sports pedigree, she attended graduate school at the University of Tennessee (where she received a master’s degree in Sports Management) and got to work with one of the top women’s basketball programs in the country. Georgia was an assistant there in 1991 when the Lady Vols won the national championship.
In addition to keeping our players healthy and in shape, Georgia will serve as Director of Basketball Operations, which means helping with everything from housing to travel arrangements to creature comforts. Her years as an Athletic Trainer give her real insight into all the ins and outs in these areas. She spent three years with the WNBA team in Cleveland and then moved to Connecticut when Cleveland folded.
We are extremely lucky that our need coincided with her desire to relocate. As Georgia says “I missed too many birthday parties and missed having lunch with my mom.” I think that tells you a lot about the kind of person we will have as the liaison between the front office and the players; knowing that someone who places such a high value on family and emotional ties is part of my staff makes my job a little easier.
