Silver Stars Release 2008 Schedule
December 13, 2007

SAN ANTONIO – Fans won’t have long to wait for 2007 Western Conference playoff rematches. The 2008 schedule released today shows the Silver Stars opening the season at Sacramento May 17 before heading home May 20 to host Western Conference nemesis Phoenix.

San Antonio plays before a national television audience four times during the regular season, including two games on ABC, which will carry the May 24 contest against Seattle at 2:30 p.m. CST and the July 12 road match with Washington at Noon CST. ESPN2 will broadcast the Stars June 24 match with Houston at 8 p.m. CST and their July 10 road contest with Chicago at 6 p.m. CST.

San Antonio will play 34 regular-season games (17 home, 17 away), matching up against each Western Conference opponent three times, with the exception of Minnesota and Los Angeles (four times). The Silver Stars play each Eastern Conference team twice, making the trip to Atlanta to face the WNBA’s newest member on June 18 before hosting Atlanta on July 11.

San Antonio’s home schedule features 10 weekend games, including four Saturday tip-offs and six Friday contests. The Silver Stars host a day game at 11:30 a.m., Thursday, July 24, when the Chicago Sky and 2007 Rookie of the Year Armintie Price come to town. On Friday, June 20, Los Angeles, which has the first overall pick in the 2008 WNBA Draft heads to the Alamo City, while the regular-season schedule wraps up on Saturday, Sept. 13, against Sacramento at the AT&T Center.

With more than 25 players expected to compete for the gold during the 2008 Olympic Games held in Beijing, China, Aug. 8-24, the league has not scheduled any games between July 28 – Aug. 27. Instead, the WNBA season will be extended by three weeks so WNBA players can represent their home countries in the 2008 Olympic Games. Similar to the 2004 season that also saw a break in the schedule for the Olympics, WNBA teams and players will remain active in the communities while on hiatus from regular season action. Players not competing in the Olympics will participate in a variety of community-based events and activities designed to give fans a unique opportunity to interact with their favorite WNBA teams.

Following the 2008 Olympic Games, in which the United States looks to earn its fourth consecutive Olympic gold medal in women’s basketball, the WNBA will tip off the second half of the season on Aug. 28. The WNBA regular season schedule concludes on September 14 with the playoffs scheduled to begin on Sept. 18.

The 2007 San Antonio Silver Stars won a franchise-best 20 games and finished the regular season second in the Western Conference standings. The Stars defeated Sacramento in three games to advance to the Western Conference Finals where they fell to eventual-champion Phoenix in a dramatic 102-100 home loss and a barn burner at Phoenix. Silver Stars Head Coach Dan Hughes earned WNBA Coach of the Year honors following the season, while all-stars Sophia Young and Becky Hammon each picked up All-WNBA honors.

The Silver Stars are currently preparing for the 2008 WNBA Draft, slated for April. Silver Stars season ticket packages start as low as $54 with full-season ticket plans beginning as low as $162.
