SAN ANTONIO – All those hours watching America’s Next Top Model came in handy for the Silver Stars recently as several of the athletes hit the runway in Ann Taylor clothes for the Hotel Valencia’s monthly Fashiontini event, featuring Ann Taylor clothes.

In an unusual twist, adidas designs joined those of Ann Taylor on the runway, as the players unveiled the 2007 WNBA uniform design. The dramatically different look features a bold star pattern along the sides of the uniform. The tribal pattern signifies the team’s existence as a tribe, forming to meet a common goal. The jersey also features a signature neckline with insert fabric representing protection and armor.

The uniform has piping that extends from the front to the back in the image of cape, connecting WNBA players as super heroes. According to adidas, the concept stems from their belief that WNBA players are modern superheroes. “Women have fought the odds in order to achieve their dreams and goals,” reads the 2007 uniform project brief. “They do this through strength, athleticism, flight, speed. The cape is an image that can connect this inspiration.”

The 2007 Silver Stars encompass every trait their uniforms are supposed to represent. They spend countless hours giving back to the community, on local, national and international levels. They visit schools, hospitals and churches. Ruth Riley serves as a spokesperson for Nothing But Nets, a global campaign to save lives by preventing malaria. Riley also visited Nairobi, Kenya, in the off-season to take part in the Healthy Women Healthy Economies East Africa Trip.

Silver Stars guards Helen Darling and Marie Ferdinand-Harris, like many women, are balancing motherhood with careers, as Darling is mother to 5-year-old triplets and Ferdinand-Harris has a 10-month-old son.
