Silver Stars Go Red Against Heart Disease

SAN ANTONIO – SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The San Antonio Silver Stars are joining the American Heart Association’s “Go Red for Women” movement when they host the Washington Mystics Friday night. The Go Red campaign raises awareness about heart disease and cardiovascular health in women.

Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women in the United States and some form of cardiovascular disease affects one in three women nationally. In the battle against this largely preventable illness, the first step towards a healthy heart is knowing your numbers. To allow fans to “know their numbers,” the American Heart Association will provide free health screenings at sections 111/112 and 116/117. The Silver Stars also encourage fans to take the Go Red Heart CheckUp at GoRedForWomen.org to calculate their personal, 10-year risk for heart disease and find information about controlling blood pressure, cholesterol and weight.

This week is also National CPR/AED Awareness Week. According to the American Red Cross, sudden cardiac arrest claims the lives of more than 166,000 people in this country every year. Sadly, an astonishing 94 percent of people who suffer sudden cardiac arrest die before reaching a hospital. If ordinary people act immediately with Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), instead of just waiting for help to arrive, many thousands of lives can be saved every year. In conjunction with National CPR/AED Awareness Week, the Silver Stars will hold a silent auction through halftime of Friday’s game with proceeds benefiting the American Heart Association. The Auction will be held in section 105 and proceeds will go towards purchasing an Automated External Defibrillation Machine for a group within the San Antonio community.

In support of the Go Red campaign, all fans are encouraged to wear red and the first 1,500 fans will receive a Go Red wristband.
