Silver Stars Name Mike Ekanem Strength Coach

SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio Silver Stars have tabbed Mike Ekanem as the team’s strength and conditioning coach, according to General Manager and Head Coach Dan Hughes.

The Houston, Texas, native played basketball at Texas Lutheran University where he was an all-conference guard. He earned his bachelor of science degree in athletic training from TLU in 2005, then graduated from California University of Pennsylvania in 2007 with a master of science in exercise science and health promotion with an emphasis in rehabilitation.

“We’re very excited to add Mike to our staff,” said Hughes. “I think his background as a player and strength and conditioning coach will serve our players well.”

Ekanem, who also played professional basketball in Europe, spent the 2007 season as an assistant strength coach for the Silver Stars. He also worked with the University of Texas at San Antonio strength and conditioning program as a volunteer coach. He is ranked as a master trainer at Spectrum Athletic Club and is a certified personal trainer by the National College of Exercise Professionals. The National Academy of Sports Medicine recognizes Ekanem as a performance enhancement specialist and corrective exercise specialist, and he is certified as a strength and conditioning specialist by the National Strength and Conditioning Association.
