San Antonio Silver Stars Chief Operating Officer Clarissa Davis-Wrightsil announced today that
Sylvia Crawley has decided to retire from the WNBA.
“I just felt like it was that time,” Crawley said. “My heart and my body were letting me know that it was time to retire. I felt like my love for the game was fading and I figured that was God’s way of transitioning me for the next phase of my life. I’ve had 21 great years in women’s basketball and I wanted to retire on my own terms and go out with fond memories.”
Crawley, a four-year WNBA veteran, joined the Silver Stars in 2003. In her one season with the Silver Stars, she averaged 3.5 points and 3.2 rebounds in 17.1 minutes per game. Prior to making the move to San Antonio, Crawley spent three seasons with the Portland Fire. She ranks 18th on the WNBA’s all-time blocked shots list with 106 blocks. For her career, Crawley appeared in 128 games, averaging 8.2 points, 4.9 rebounds and 1.2 assists in 25.3 minutes per game.
“Clarissa (Davis-Wrightsil) and Dee (Brown) were very supportive and understood my decision,” Crawley added. “Everyone in the Silver Stars organization has been wonderful and like family to me.”
Crawley’s professional career reaches much further than the WNBA. Her résumé includes playing for USA Basketball, a three-year stint in the American Basketball League (ABL) and a number of years playing professionally in Europe and Asia. She won a gold medal as a member of the 1996 USA Jones Cup Team and a silver medal as a member of the 1995 USA Basketball Team that participated in the World University Games. She was named 1995 USA Basketball Female Athlete of the Year. Prior to joining the WNBA, Crawley played three seasons in the ABL with the Portland Power and the Colorado Xplosion. In 1997, she won the ABL Slam Dunk Contest with a blind folded dunk. Crawley has also played overseas in France, Italy, Spain and Korea.
“We are truly thankful for the contributions Sylvia made to the Silver Stars and the city of San Antonio,” Davis-Wrightsil said. “Sylvia is a great person who has a wonderful future ahead of her. I am sure she will continue to have success in her life. The Silver Stars organization wishes her the best in her future endeavors.”
Crawley will now put more of her time towards her clothing business, Ephod Customs, and her real estate business. She will also be going to seminary school to study theology.
