Steve Shuman Named Assistant Coach
SAN ANTONIO (May 3, 2011) Head coach and general manager Dan Hughes announced today the addition of eight-year WNBA coaching veteran Steve Shuman to the San Antonio Silver Stars staff as assistant coach. Shuman previously served as assistant coach and video coordinator for the Sacramento Monarchs from 1999-2008, helping guide the team to the 2005 WNBA Championship and back-to-back Western Conference titles in 2005 and 2006.
"We are pleased to have Steve join the Silver Stars staff, Hughes said. He brings championship WNBA experience from his years on the Sacramento Monarchs coaching staff, as well as NBA experience. His extensive scouting and creative offensive background will be an asset to our staff.
During his time with the Monarchs, Shuman maintained dual roles, working with the Sacramento Kings during the WNBA offseason. He began his career in professional basketball as an assistant video coordinator for the Kings in 1997 and maintained this role through the 2006 season when he was promoted to minor league scout. He has also worked as an advance scout for the Cleveland Cavaliers and New Orleans Hornets.
Im excited to be joining the Silver Stars staff, Shuman said. Im very familiar with the organization from my time in Sacramento and know the team has a great reputation and has been very successful over the past few seasons. Im looking forward to contributing to that success.
Shuman earned his degree in education from California State University Sacramento in 1989 and began his coaching career as an assistant basketball coach at Jesuit High School in Sacramento (1989-91). He then served six seasons as head coach at Trinity High School in Las Vegas, Nevada (1991-97) before joining the Kings.
