Silver Stars beat Sun to clinch 1st place in West

SAN ANTONIO, Sept. 11 (AP) --Sophia Young scored 24 points to lead the San Antonio Silver Stars to a 78-74 victory over the Connecticut Sun on Thursday night, clinching home-court advantage throught the playoffs.
Ann Wauters and Becky Hammon added 17 points each for the Silver Stars (23-10), while Erin Buescher scored 11. Wauters also had 12 rebounds as San Antonio finished a perfect 14-0 against the Eastern Conference.
Asjha Jones had 18 points to lead the Sun (20-13), who have lost three straight after a season high seven-game winning streak. Connecticut's loss, coupled with Detroit's win against Washington, clinched the East for the Shock.
Tamika Whitmore scored 12 points, Erin Phillips 11 and Jamie Carey 10, while Kerri Gardin grabbed 14 rebounds for the Sun.
The Silver Stars trailed 64-59 midway through the fourth quarter before Young scored 10 straight San Antonio points, including back-to-back three point plays, to pull to 70-69.
Gardin gave the Sun a 72-71 lead, but San Antonio pulled ahead when Hammon scoring seven in the final 2 minutes, including her last layup with 5 seconds left.
The Sun were down by as much as 10 points in the first half, and tied it at 40, but Hammon hit a 3-pointer with 11 seconds left to give San Antonio a 43-42 halftime lead.
