Hammon scores 28 and Silver Stars beat Mystics

WASHINGTON(AP) Becky Hammon scored a season-high 28 points and combined with Sophia Young to score San Antonio's final 24 points and the Silver Stars held off the Washington Mystics for a 83-75 win on Sunday.
After watching a 12-point second half lead turn into a one-point deficit, Hammon hit a 3-pointer with 5:54 left to give the Western Conference-leading Silver Stars (12-6) a 63-61 lead. From there she and Young, who scored 23 points, had their way against the Mystics defense.
Hammon, who had a game-high six assists, hit four 3-point field goals and went 10-for-10 from the free-throw line.
Alana Beard led the Mystics (6-11) with 20 points, including 18 in the second half. Rookie Crystal Langhorne scored a career-high 17 points and Taj McWilliams-Franklin added 15 points for the Mystics, who have dropped three straight games.
Ann Wauters scored 18 points for the Silver Stars, who have won 10 of their last 14 games and four straight overall.
The Silver Stars, who completed a season sweep over the Mystics, trailed 21-15 early in the second quarter, but took the lead as Wauters scored nine points during a 14-2 rally. Wauters hit 6 of 7 field-goal attempts in the first half and the Silver Stars led 36-28 at halftime. |
