  • Just a Thought: You can eat everybody’s food; you never know what’s in it!

    Hello Faithful Fans,

It’s time for “Stretching the Truth”.  Our special guest is Brittany Wilkins, a.k.a., Brit.

Before I go into details, let me give you a quick overview of how our cookouts work.  Whenever we have time, we try to get together for some good quality food and thought provoking conversations.  Everyone is to bring their favorite dish (cooked or bought), and we just pig out and have an awesome time.  I came up with this game last year where we would decide who had the best and worst dish.  We came up with a few rules on how we would judge.

    1. Whoever leaves with an empty dish wins the best dish
    2. Whoever leaves with a lot of food left in their dish received the worst dish.
    3. If it is a tie we take a vote.

Simple, right?  Well last year everyone made their best dish and brought it to the cookout, everything was delicious.  Towards the end of the cookout I noticed no one was eating my pasta salad.

I began encouraging everyone to try my pasta salad.  I have never heard so many excuses. I think I heard every excuse in the book.

“It looks good, I’m just full.”

“What does it have in it? Oh, I don’t like broccoli.”

“I’m going to get some later,” and finally I watched as Marie packed six enormous to-go plates, never once touching my pasta salad. She said, “Helen, I just don’t want any. It’s nasty”.

Sad and disappointed I received the ‘Worst Dish’ award, taking home all the pasta salad I had made.  When I got home I immediately called my mom and told her about my MEAN teammates, that’s when she reminded me that they just don’t know good cooking when  they see it and not to worry because everyone back in Ohio loves my pasta salad.  And then I realized they were just being funny because I came up with the rules.  Whatever the real reason, I will never, ever make pasta salad for this team again.  Oh and VJ received the ‘Best Dish’ award with her bake beans, which I didn’t think were that good.

Anyway, enough about the past let me tell you about this year’s cookout. This was a unique group of girls. I’m not sure what kind of cookout they normally attend but they brought some interesting dishes. Someone brought wheat thins in a box, ketchup… no mustard, no relish, no condiments at all just enough ketchup for maybe two hamburgers and three hot dogs.

They brought vegetable plates, two 2-liters of drinks and three bags of ice. We had more ice then drinks, I saw people putting ice in a cup and letting it melt so they could have some water.

It was hilarious… all this dry food and nothing to rinse it down with.  Of all things, they had the audacity to start eating without me. So being the food critic that I am, I went around and sampled everyone’s food, being overly particular about everything.  That was until I came across some pickles rapped in thinly sliced salmon and peanut butter.  And as I suspected no one had touched this ‘deadly dish’ they called “Chilly Dilly’s”.

I held up the ‘deadly dish’ to find out who was trying to sicken everyone and what in the world this dish was.  Brittany runs over extremely excited yelling “Helen, I made that! Do you like it?”

I gave her a look that told it all and said, “Absolutely not. What is this mess Brittany?”

She tried to convince me that it was good and I should try it. I really didn’t want to hurt her feelings, so I remembered all the excuses I was giving last year and told her the same.  But like me she was in denial and wouldn’t take No for an answer, so finally I said, “Brittany, I don’t know what you were thinking when you made those but I just don’t want it, sorry.”

Then I awarded her with the ‘Worst Dish’ award.  I tried to soothe her by telling her I won it last year and I’m sure the next cookout someone else will take over the award.  The ‘Best Dish’ was awarded to Kendra for her green bean casserole.

But hey, who am I to judge? We all come from different backgrounds and we grow up on different foods so I’m going to include in this blog the recipe for both the ‘Best and Worst dishes’.  Make and eat at your own risk, I am not responsible for anyone getting sick. However, some of us are really interested in learning to cook so if you have any recipes that you think we would like, please send them in. I’m not promising I will make your recipe, better yet like it, BUT… you never know, I might give you a shout out on my next blog.

Thanks again, faithful fans for reading our blogs and sharing these moments with us.  Until next time, read, enjoy the recipes and remember, you can’t believe everything you read because sometimes people ‘Stretch the Truth’.

    The ‘Worst Dish’:  Chilly Dilly’s

    1. Buy sliced beef (in the package)
    2. Spread a light layer of cream cheese on the beef
    3. Take dill pickles (the long cut ones) dry them off because they stick better to the cream.
    4. Roll the pickle up on the beef layer
    5. Then you have yourself some Chilly Dilly goodness.

The ‘Best Dish’:  Green Bean Casserole

    1.  Drain and put in the bottom of 9x13 inch pan

    1. 2 cans of French cut green beans
    2. 1 can of shoe peg corn

    2.  Combine and place on top of vegetables above
      8 oz cream cheese

2 cans cream of celery soup

      1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

    3.  Topping
1 roll of Ritz crackers (crushed)

melt 3 tbs. of butter or margarine

mix with crackers and spread over the top
