Darling Blog: Stretching the Truth

Mo’s Dinner invitation

  • Just a thought! – If you really don’t want to give away something….don‘t offer it, because someone just might say YES!

  • Hello faithful fans,

Welcome to Helen Darling’s “Stretching the Truth,” blog! I am here to give you some insight on this year’s training camp and some inside dirt on the new and old players. I will try to report some of our lows, highs, sad, funny and down right crazy moments. Everything you hear may not be all true, but that’s your job to figure out the whole truth. I’m just reporting the facts!

My first story goes to Morenike Atunrase a.k.a. Mo. I believe she landed in San Antonio Saturday night around 9ish. Having motherly instincts I figured she would be hungry. I had just finished cooking pork chops (which were marinated for three days), green beans and corn. (I try not to eat starchy foods at night).

I called Mo and asked “Are you hungry? I made some pork chops, green beans and corn.” She replied, “Ooh, yes, what apartment are you in?” So I gave her my apartment number. She came over. I gave her a big hug and welcomed her to San Antonio, our team and into my apartment. I told her to get whatever she wanted, and she did, taking all the corn. She must have thought I had already eaten. I didn’t say anything because I knew she was probably famished. I just went to the freezer took out another microwave bag of sweet corn and pushed 60 sec. See no worries!

We sat down, began to eat and shoot the breeze, you know, getting to know each other. Training camp was the next day and we had to get up early so I knew I had to get to bed because it was going to be a long day. Before she left I wanted to make sure she had something for breakfast so I offered her some microwave oatmeal asking, “Do you want these two oatmeal packages?”

    She replied “Ooh, Yes!”

And this is how the rest of the conversation went: “Do you want some fruit?”

    “Ooh, Yes!”

    “An apple or an Orange?”

    “Both”

“Do you want some sugar and butter for the oatmeal?”

    “Ooh, Yes!”

Now in my head I was laughing and thought I’m going to see how long it takes for her to say NO! So I proceed. “Do you need some milk?”

    “Ooh, Yes!”

“Do you need some toilet paper?

“Ooh, Yes!” “Do you want some bottled water?

“Ooh, Yes!” I couldn’t think of anything else to offer, so I just asked, “Do you need anything else?”

She actually thought about it, putting a finger to her chin, and replied slowly…”Ummm, no, I think I should be okay. Thank you!”

So Mo’s dinner invitation turned into a shopping spree. I thought that was the funniest thing and the next day at training camp I told Erin (Buescher) and Tonya Holley about Mo’s dinner invitation and they told me I had met my match because, if you offer me anything most likely I will say yes to be polite.

So just a reminder, “If you really don’t want to give away something….don’t offer it, because someone just might say, “Ooh, YES!
