June 2005

Since U Been Gone

Well I apologize for using a Kelly Clarkson song title in this post. The Stars are back in the SBC Center tonight and they'll notice a difference from the last time they played in San Antonio. The NBA Finals are over and aside from a little confetti still falling from the rafters, the biggest change is that the Silver Stars will be playing on their own court. It's the summer of Stars now!

Can Katie keep it up? She has been posting impressive numbers and in the last three games she is averaging 9 boards and 14 points...off the bench! It's great to see the rookie finding her groove and putting points on the board.

LaToya Thomas
It's been a tough stretch for the Silver Stars. The injury to LaToya Thomas turned out to be more serious than first thought and she may join Kendra Wecker on the bench for season. Nikki McCray is likely to take the starting spot in her absence with Edna Campbell coming off the bench.

There are a couple of special items to mention going on with the team in town soon. Did you know that this Saturday's game against the Comets is Faith Night? After the game Katie Feenstra and David Robinson will be speaking.

The other happening to be clued in on is the Taco Bell/KFC appearances this week. Check out the schedule to see where you can spot the Stars. They have started building KFC/Taco Bell combos, which eliminates the old problem of deciding between the two... now all they have to do is come up with an Original Recipe Chicken Burrito...

Stage Is Set

The excitement for tonight's game against Connecticut game is in the air. The Stars and Sun game will be televised locally (WB-35) and will be carried on NBATV ... add that to the fact that President Donna Orender and David Stern will be in attendance... It's going to be a big night to match the big challenge the Stars face. The Sun are scorching teams early this season - they've won five straight and have already registered a win against us this season. But this home court crowd is sure to be fired up for them....I can't wait!

Friendly Reminder

Don't forget that with the NBA Finals in town, the SBC Center has elevated security, so be sure to plan accordingly when you cheer on the Stars as they go for their third home straight home win!

Returing To Connecticut
-- Posted by Wendy Palmer-Daniel, June 7, 2005, 4:30pm

The long anticipated return to the Mohegan Sun Arena. Thursday the 2005 San Antonio Silver Stars won our first game against Charlotte Sting. As my teammates embraced the feeling of victory, I quickly began to focus on the next game. I returned home to deal with the many emotions that flooded my mind about returning to Connecticut. Truly I was uneasy about going back to the place where I had spent two very defining years as a player with the Sun organization.

Upon entering the arena and seeing the 2004 Eastern Championship banner, I had a sudden rush of emotions and tried to secretly hide it from my teammates. I quickly remembered all the hard work, the ups and downs of the previous two years. Then coach began practice and I quickly was brought back to the moment and the San Antonio Silver Stars. Game time came and went and it was definitely different playing against my former teammates, but it was business first. After the initial entry and sighting of the championship banner I felt as if it was a normal away game. I am proud of my past, but I am very excited about my present and future. I am extremely happy and thankful to be a part of the San Antonio Silver Stars. GO STARS!

Win One

It was quite an evening at the SBC Center tonight as the Silver Stars got their first win of the season in front of a loud San Antonio crowd of 8,380 fans. The "Stars" of the game (no pun intended) were Katie Feenstra and Wendy Palmer-Daniel. Katie was a force down low, scoring 16 points off the bench and getting to the line eight times! Wendy continued her strong play going 5-of-7 from the field and posting a career-high six assists. Wendy also had some of the most exciting plays of the night - bringing fans to their feet by attacking the basket and hitting difficult shots in traffic.

The SBC Center sounded great tonight. When the Sting pulled even with the Stars in the second-half it felt like the fans were really helping the Stars defense get some stops. Great job!

The Silver Stars now head to a celestial matchup against the Connecticut Sun... Stars versus Sun? It's out of this world! Get it?!

Closer To Home

Chantelle Anderson
I really like playing in Seattle. No, it's not because the rainy weather frizzes my hair and makes me immediately miss the sun. Nor is it the fact that grunge will never go out of style in the Pacific Northwest. Nope. It's because Seattle is as close to home as I get these days. I went to high school in Vancouver, WA (not Canada). Vancouver is about three hours south of Seattle and since my parents moved to Southern California, I rarely get back to my old roots in Washington.

Whenever we play Seattle, my friends that still live in Vancouver, as well as the fans that still follow my career, have a chance to see me play and catch up afterward during a late dinner, usually at the Ultimate Cheesecake Factory (I am the biggest fan of their lemon raspberry cream cheesecake...YUM!!). This last time it was especially nice because the basketball coach and some of the girls from my high school made the trip to come see the game (shout out to the Hudson's Bay Lady Eagles!!!). Even though we didn't win this time, it's always nice to see familiar faces that support me and my career.

And thanks to my new role on my new team, they finally got to see me play! Now if I could only stay out of foul trouble! Believe me guys, I'm working on it, I promise! Well, that's about it on playing in Seattle...until next time...GO STARS!!!

First of all, congrats go out to Nikki McCray who sank a free throw two minutes into the game against the LA Sparks to give her 2,500 career points! That makes her the 18th WNBA player to reach that mark.

More notes from the Sparks game: Chantelle Anderson set a new career high with 16 points. And Dalma Ivanyi saw her first action for the Silver Stars after she was activated from the injured list when Bernadette Ngoyisa went out with a knee contusion.

And how about the play of Wendy Palmer-Daniel? In the first four games of the season she's averaging 21 minutes and 7.8 points per game shooting 57% from the floor. She has lead the team in scoring for two of the first five games of the season. Not bad for a "seasoned" veteran!

Have you heard that Thursday's home game against the Sting is a Taco Bell/KFC Kids Night? Check out the details and go get your free kids ticket! When you stop by to get it, pick me up a burrito from Taco Bell and a side of KFC cole slaw, ok?

Due For A "W"

The Silver Stars have gotten off to a rough start in 2005 but there are promising signs that the team is beginning to find it's groove under Coach Dan Hughes' system. In the home opener on May 21st, the Silver Stars trailed by as much as 19 points but put on a late second-half push to narrow the lead to five with minutes to play. In similar fashion, the Stars came back in the second home game and cut a 13 point lead to just two with under a minute to play.

Coach Hughes is instilling a focus on defense in this team and that - along with developing chemistry with so many new faces - is bound to take some time. The Stars have seen strong performances by Marie Ferdinand in the first three outings - averaging over 17 points per game and dropping 24 on the Comets in the first game of the season. LaToya Thomas is flourishing under her new/old coach. Thomas and Coach Hughes are reunited after working together on the 2003 Cleveland Rockers squad. LaToya is honing her jump shot and has hit some big baskets in the comebacks. In the first road game against Detroit, she tied the game-high with 16 points shooting 6-for-13 from the field. I look for LaToya to maintain the scoring (showcasing a sweet baseline jumper) and increase her rebounds. She is averaging 4.7 rebounds per game and will improve as she gets more comfortable working with her teammates down low.

While the play of the Stars big three - Ferdinand, Thomas, and PeeWee Johnson - is crucial to their success, the Stars also expect to see production from the role players and rookies. The Stars suffered a major blow in the season opener when their first round draft pick Kendra Wecker went down with a torn ACL that likely put her out of the commission for the rest of the season.

Rookie Katie Feenstra - the eighth pick of the 2005 draft - has started two of the three games this season and is in the process of finding her place in the gameplan and adapting to the WNBA level.

As the team looks for it's first win, the big topic has got to be chemistry. With more game experience the team will be better equipped to not only produce points, but buy into Coach Hughes' philosphy and produce defensive stops. It is a process that takes time, but the Stars are due for a "W".

The Stars have started slow and finished strong in their first two home games. Will they go on strong run to counter this slow start to the season? Stay tuned...
