Hello from Spain!
Hey Stars fans, I hope this finds everyone doing well in San Antonio. I am playing in Rivas, Spain right now—and since I have been studying Spanish, I wanted to try to write this update in English and in Spanish (with the help of my teammate, Tamara).
I live 20 minutes outside of Madrid, and have really enjoyed my time here. Madrid is a beautiful city with many historical sites, museums, and parks. Retiro Park and the Prado Museum are two of my favorites. I have always enjoyed playing overseas and learning about different cultures.
There are a few things I think Americans could learn from the Spanish culture. The first is how to slow down and enjoy life. Although it takes awhile to get used to eating lunch at 2:00 and dinner at 10:00pm—meals are not eaten on the run or in a hurry like in the States. Instead, friends and family get together and enjoy each other’s company. Ordering food to go is not even an option at most restaurants. If you ever visit Spain, I would highly recommend trying their tapas: tortillas, croquetas, paella and jamon. My teammate’s mom is teaching me how to cook some of their traditional Spanish dishes.
In the States we are accustomed to having what we want, when we want it—so at first the Spanish concept of “siesta” is an inconvenience. Stores and restaurants close in the afternoons from 2-5, which coincides with when they eat lunch and either take a nap or rest. Your list of things “to do” will simply have to wait until everything opens back up in the evening. “No pasa nada” is a concept that many Americans should learn: relax, take a few hours to enjoy life each day!
Lastly, since I am trying to “go green” I really appreciate the fact that there are recycling containers on every street corner, they are way ahead of us when it comes to that!!
One thing that I do miss about the States is only having one practice a day!! We have 2 more weeks left in our regular season and then the play-offs where we will face Salamanca in the first round. I have truly enjoyed my time over here in Spain, but hope to return to San Antonio very soon!
Until then!
Ruth
