What’s Up Helen?

SASilverstars.com's Ben Hunt is catching up with the Silver Stars players and coaches during the off-season to find out 'What's Up' with them.

Ben Hunt: We all know you are an accomplished author – what’s harder coming up with original material or being a professional basketball player?

Helen Darling: Coming up with original material I think is harder. One, because I've been playing basketball my entire life. And although I'm inspired to write depending on what my kids do and say, trying to determine how to write it can be very challenging. But I love both jobs equally.

BH: Are you working on a new book?

HD: I wish I could write more. I love writing and I have a folder on my computer of a list of book ideas I need to write. I am finishing up the “Days of the Week” series. I am working on getting them all illustrated and out in the book stores. I'm hoping to have all the books finished by the 2009 season.

BH: With triplets, I’m sure there is always something going on in your house. What is the most comical thing they’ve done as group?

HD: People always ask me that question and some of the things they do, you just have to be there to understand. This just happened the other day and I thought it was the funniest thing. JaJuan didn't, but we had to make a point.

The kids made Principal's list and honor roll and they were having an award ceremony which started at 9 a.m., but Jalen told me his teacher told me not to come until 9:30. Now all the papers that came home said 9 a.m. But I listened to Jalen and got there around 9:20, so I could get a good seat and get good pictures, but when I got there I had missed them. It started at 9 a.m.

So I found Jalen and asked him why he told me not to come until 9:30. (I'm like hey kid did you not want me to come....hahaha) well for some reason he got times mixed up. But I'm really not sure why I listened to a 6-year-old. Anyway that wasn't the story… Orlando had bought the kids a new shirt for the ceremony as a way of saying congrats. They didn't have to wear uniforms. Well JaJuan felt the shirt was just too big and he didn't want to wear it. So he pouted and cried a little. Orlando got upset and felt he was being ungrateful so he had a surprise for JaJuan for when he got home.

Once he got home Orlando made him take off his clothes and he had to put on some old sweats that were too small. The bad part is he cut holes in the sweat suit. Hahahaha and made JaJuan wear the too small, holey sweats all day. I beat they won't cry about their clothes being too big again. I felt bad for JaJuan because you know that is my baby, but I had to support Orlando.

BH: What is your favorite city to visit and why?

HD: I don't really have a favorite place because I don't do much in any of the cities. I don't really have a lot of family that travels, I'm usually too tired (or lazy) to walk around and enjoy the cities. I love the city with the heavenly beds and free internet. I think that’s Sacramento. So I guess Sacramento wins my vote.

BH: If you could be any animal, what would you be?

HD: If I could be any animal? Well let me see which one fits my personality. Well this doesn't match my personality, but I would say a Kanagroo because I love that they have a pouch to carry things (babies) in it. I love the fact that they can have a baby, put them in a pouch and keep on doing what they need to do. Yeah...that’s my personality. Can't have anything holding me down, I need to put everything in my little pouch and keep moving. LOL!
