The Silver Stars ended a two-game losing streak with a 79-71 win over the New York Liberty tonight at the AT&T Center.

The Silver Stars went on a 9-3 run early in the first quarter to take an 11-8 lead and they never looked back. Shameka Christon had eight of her 15 points in the opening quarter, but with Erin Buescher putting up eight of her 16 points and Sophia Young and Ruth Riley each adding four points, the Silver Stars had the 21-16 advantage at the end of the first quarter. The Silver Stars shot 63.6 percent in the quarter and held New York to 40 percent shooting.

Liberty rookie, Shay Doron, scored her first WNBA points with a 3-pointer in the second quarter. But veteran Becky Hammon made her presence felt in the second quarter as she scored 10 of her 22 points. Christon, Lindsay Bowen, and Janel McCarville each put in three points, but that was not enough. The Silver Stars had an 11 point halftime lead.

San Antonio had a 17-point lead with 1:08 remaining in the quarter, but New York went on an 8-0 run in the final 30 seconds of the third quarter to cut the Silver Stars lead to nine. Loree Moore and Tiffany Jackson helped the Liberty cut into the lead as they both scored six points in the quarter.

The Silver Stars opened the fourth quarter with a 7-0 run to take the 70-57 lead. The Liberty got within five, but Young’s ten points in the quarter boosted the Silver Stars to the win.

Young had her eighth double-figure game in the last nine games with 21 points. Buescher and Hammon added 16 points and 22 points, respectively. Christon and Moore were the high scorers for the Liberty each posting 15 points. The Silver Stars forced 17 turnovers, while committing 16.

The Minnesota Lynx will visit the Silver Stars on Wednesday, June 20 at 7 p.m.
