The Silver Stars fell 70-60 to the visiting Chicago Sky at the AT&T Center Saturday night.
San Antonio scored the first basket of the game, but Chicago quickly went up 5-2 and never trailed. The Silver Stars struggled from the floor in the first quarter as they shot just 37.5 percent. The poor shooting effort kept San Antonio to just 14 first-quarter points, eight of which by second-year forward Sophia Young. Young finished the game with 15.
The Sky pushed their lead to 11 in the second quarter, whileSan Antonio had six assists on nine field goals in the quarter and shot a paltry 25 percent. Candice Dupree put in seven of her 22 points in the quarter to bring Chicago to a 32-24 halftime lead.
Becky Hammon opened the third quarter with a 3-pointer to bring the Silver Stars within five. The Silver Stars were within three points with 7:42 remaining in the third, before the Sky went on an 8-0 run and both teams went scoreless the last 2:10 of the third. The late surge gave Chicago a 52-47 lead going into the fourth quarter.
In the final period, Chasity Melvin scored eight of her 17 points, andHammon had five for the Silver Stars. However, the Sky outscored the Silver Stars 18-13 in the quarter to claim the 70-60 victory.
Hammon led the Silver Stars with 20 points marking her fourth game this season with 20 -plus points. Young added 15 points. Candice Dupree had 22 points for the Sky, while Chasity Melvin pitched in 17. The Silver Stars were 2-of-17 from beyond the arc and were held to 33.3 percent shooting. The loss marks the Silver Stars second straight loss and drops the squad to 4-4 on the season.
The New York Liberty visit San Antonio to face the Silver Stars on Saturday, June 16 as San Antonio celebrates Dad’s and Daughters night.
