Monarchs Outlast Silver Stars
Box Score
SACRAMENTO, June 5 (AP) -- Rebekkah Brunson had 21 points and nine rebounds Tuesday night to lead the Sacramento Monarchs to a 74-57 victory over the San Antonio Silver Stars.
The Monarchs (4-2) won their second straight game and moved past San Antonio (4-3) into first place in the Western Conference.
Nicole Powell had 16 points and nine rebounds for the Monarchs, who pulled away in the fourth quarter when they outscored the Stars 24-12. Both Kara Lawson and Yolanda Griffith scored 10 points.
San Antonio struggled to find a consistent offense all game. It trailed by two points at halftime and never took the lead.
Vickie Johnson scored 12 points for the Stars and Marie Ferdinand-Harris added 10. Shanna Crossley and Sophia Young each had nine points, while Becky Hammon added nine points and six assists.
Starting in place of injured DeMya Walker, Brunson made her presence felt, especially in the third quarter when she frequently got loose inside for easy baskets. Powell scored nine points in the third quarter to help the Monarchs take a 50-45 lead.
The Monarchs found out Monday they will play the rest of the season without Walker, who tore the patella tendon tear in her right knee early in Saturday's victory over Los Angeles.
The Stars committed 26 turnovers and shot just 38 percent in producing their lowest point total of the season.
