After holding the Connecticut Sun to a franchise low seven points in the first quarter and leading by more than 20 at the half, the Silver Stars barely managed to hang on for a 74-71 win in their home opener.
Connecticut’s seven-point first quarter was the lowest scoring quarter for the Sun since they scored nine points against Phoenix on July 8, 2006. The Silver Stars also picked up a franchise low by only allowing seven points in a quarter.
The Silver Stars held Connecticut to just two points through the first eight minutes of the contest. At the end of the quarter the Silver Stars had the 17-7 advantage.
Shanna Crossley poured in 16 points in the second quarter to bring the Silver Stars to a 39-18 lead going into halftime.
Katie Doughlas came out of intermission and scored 14 of her 21 points in the third quarter. Asjha Jones added nine. But that was not enough as the Silver Stars were able to open up a 25-point lead midway through the third quarter with a 49-24 advantage.
In the final quarter the Sun were able to pull within four with 7:35 left in regulation. But with Becky Hammon’s seven of her 17 points in the quarter the Silver Stars were able to hang on.
