Nine Selected To Invite-Only Camp
"Surprised," said Oregon State Alumni Tiffany Ducker after being selected. " I want to thank God for getting me to this point bcecause I was kind of scared coming in because it's the Shock but I just played hard and it worked for me."
Ducker played Pac-10 basketball at Oregon State. After graduating in 2009, she played a year in Slovakia and then split time between Romania and Greece this past off-season before attending the tryout camp in Tulsa.
Ducker was one of nine players selected to move-on to the next round of practices, all of whom have impressive collegiate and professional careers.
"I'm excited," said University of Miami Alumni Latoya Drake. "I thought I had a chance when I got here and I'm excited that I made it."
Drake traveled from Georgia to attend the open tryout in Tulsa.
Last year, Armelie Lumanu participated in training camp with the Indiana Fever after graduating from Mississipi State. Since, she has been a research intern at Dikembe Mutumbo's Foundation which helps build hospitals in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Lumanu is from Kinshasa, the same village that Mutumbo grew up in.
"I'm a defensive player," Lumanu said. "Defense is something you know, when you love something, you should do it."
Former Putnam city West standout in Oklahoma City, Danielle Gant, also advanced in the open tryout. At Texas A&M, Gant was twice named to Big 12 All-Defensive Team (2007 & 2008) and ranks in the top-10 all time at Texas A&M in career field goals made (453), career free throws made (241), career steals (191), career blocks (81) and career rebounds (681).
Practices will resume on the evening of April 29th and continue on April 30th before the final roster spots for training camp are filled.
