Gold medalist joins 175 U.S. Olympians on Oprah’s season premiere

Katie Smith has had a memorable two weeks. She won her third Olympic gold medal with Team USA in Beijing Aug. 23 and then became the third WNBA player to score 5,000 career points Sunday.

On Wednesday the Shock guard hit another pinnacle - as a guest on The Oprah Winfrey Show. Smith is one of 175 members from the 2008 U.S. Olympic team who will appear on the popular talk show’s season premiere, which will air Monday.

“It was really a celebration of all the Olympians and what we did there,” said Smith, who brought her mother with her to attend the filming in Chicago. To accommodate the extraordinary number of guests, the show was filmed in Millennium Park. The public access makes it “the biggest audience in Oprah Show history,” according to Oprah.com.

“Millennium Park has a stage and seating but they also had a little bit of the lawn where people were allowed to come and watch so it was a big crowd,” Katie said. “A lot of fun, a lot of energy.”

Smith didn’t get to spend any one-on-one time with Oprah, but the media mogul did have her picture taken with each team. Smith also had a picture taken with eight-time gold medalist swimmer Michael Phelps, which she didn’t get to do in Beijing.

Smith said she’s not a diligent, everyday viewer of Oprah’s show but she does enjoy it, and the chance to be on the show is one of the more memorable moments of her basketball career. “It’s up there, so it was a blast,” she said. “I mean, Oprah’s doing it and anything she touches usually turns out well.”

The Oprah Winfrey Show season premiere will air this Monday, Sept. 8, at 4 p.m. on ABC (Channel 7 in Detroit).
