Shock Announce 2004 Regular Season Roster

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. - Detroit Shock Head Coach/Director of Player Personnel Bill Laimbeer announced today the team’s 2004 regular season roster. The Shock released guard Allison Curtin and placed forward Ayana Walker on the injured list with a left hamstring strain. All 13 WNBA teams had to cut down to 11 active players today and can keep as many as two players on the injured list. On Tuesday, May 18, the Shock released guards Stacey Thomas and Isabel Sanchez and on Tuesday, May 11, center Jennifer Smith was released from the original preseason roster. Today’s roster moves mark the final ones before the start of the 2004 regular season.

Curtin finished the 2004 preseason with averages of 5.0 points, 2.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 12.8 minutes in four games with the Shock. She suffered a partially torn right ACL during the 2003 preseason and spent her entire WNBA rookie season on the injured list rehabilitating with trainer Laura Ramus. Curtin was honored by the WNBA with the July Community Assist Award for her extensive community outreach.

Thomas, who was released Tuesday, May 18, finished the 2004 preseason with averages of 0.6 points, 2.0 rebounds, 1.0 assists and 10.0 minutes in three games with the Shock. Thomas was acquired by Detroit from Phoenix prior to last season’s trade deadline in exchange for Tamara Moore (7/31/03) and finished the 2003 regular season with averages of 2.0 points, 1.4 rebounds and 8.9 minutes in 30 games (Phoenix and Detroit).

Sanchez, who was also released Tuesday, May 18, finished the 2004 preseason with averages of 2.5 points, 0.5 assists, 1.50 steals and 12.5 minutes in two games with the Shock.

2004 home opener: 2003 WNBA Champion Detroit Shock will face the Los Angeles Sparks in a rematch of last year’s WNBA Finals on Saturday, May 29 at 4 p.m. at The Palace. The Shock will receive their rings and watch the 2003 WNBA Championship banner raised before playing in front of an ABC national television audience.
