The Spirit of Basketball will be given to the first 3,000 fans at the June 3rd game vs. New York
Shock Center Ruth Riley Pens Children’s Book
AUBURN HILLS, Mich. - When the Detroit Shock host the New York Liberty on Friday, June 3 at 7:30 p.m., the first 3,000 fans through the gates of The Palace will receive, courtesy of Big Boy, The Spirit of Basketball, a children's book written by Shock Center Ruth Riley.
"Writing the book was an amazing experience," said the 6'5" Riley, a graduate of Notre Dame and the 2003 WNBA Finals MVP. "Working with Paul Hickey (co-author) and Chris Hiller (illustrator) was great. We really came together as a team and spent a lot of hours developing the story and the characters. We wanted to make sure the message was the right one for kids: that basketball is the same no matter where you live or what language you speak. I think we did a nice job, and I think kids will find great enjoyment reading The Spirit of Basketball."
Hickey is a manager in the community relations department and Hiller works in the Palace Sports & Entertainment creative group.
The 3,000-book giveaway is the largest promotional distribution featuring a player-authored book in league history. Riley wrote the book as part of her continuing commitment to being a role model for her young fans, girls and boys alike, and fans of the WNBA. Riley, along with her Shock teammates, believes that it is an honor to be a role model in the community and is committed to the fans, the community, the organization, and her teammates.
The Spirit of Basketball teaches the lesson that the language and spirit of the sport of basketball is the same all over the world. Maria, the main character in the story, learns that no matter where you experience basketball --- at a Detroit Shock game, in Russia, in Spain or in Beijing, China --- we all share the love for the essence of the game.
Detroit Shock giveaways will continue throughout the season, including: June 8, 2005 - Deanna Nolan Poster, June 10, 2005 - Detroit Shock Team Calendar, June 24, 2005 - Swin Cash Visor and June 26, 2005 - Swin Cash Story Book.
