Friday June 4, 2004 the WNBA Champion Detroit Shock team, including Head Coach Bill Laimbeer and All-Stars Swin Cash and Deanna Nolan, joined Shockwave, the L’Anse Creuse North High School Varsity Girls Basketball team, and All-Star Reading Team members to tip-off the 2004 Read to Achieve literacy program at L’Anse Creuse Green Elementary. The Detroit Shock Read to Achieve program presented by HAP (Health Alliance Plan) continues to promote reading and online literacy and encourages families and adults to read regularly with young children.

The Read To Achieve event consisted of Green Elementary students writing creative story essays that Shock players and All-Star Reading team members shared with the students. Brainstormers, a Royal Oak based theatre group who are supporting the Shock’s efforts to promote the importance of literacy throughout Metro Detroit, then closed out the program in a unique fashion by acting out five creative stories for the students with the help of Green Elementary students and Shock players.

The Brainstormer’s were a significant part to the success of the Read To Achieve program at Green Elementary. The three man-band of the Brainstormer’s included a member of the Spare Tire group that performs at Detroit Piston games and a member of The Palace security staff. The Brainstormer’s wild and crazy antics amused the students and even brought smiles to many of the Shock players and parents at the event. The final story that the Brainstormer’s performed was by far the best. The story required the participation from a Shock player and a Green Elementary student. Shock team captain and Olympian Swin Cash was the active participant from the team. With the help of a little acting on behalf of Cash and the commentary of the Brainstormers the story was humorous and exciting. The entire event was a success and the students and staff at L’Anse Creuse were extremely supportive in promoting the Detroit Shock and the Read to Achieve program.
