Riley Part Of Two All-Star Weekends

This past weekend showcased many favorite NBA players during the All-Star festivities in Denver, Colorado, but many WNBA players took part in the events as well. The Detroit Shock’s Ruth Riley took a break from playing with the Colorado Chill of the National Women’s Basketball League (NWBL) to participate in some of the All-Star activities.

“We have a lot of obligations for the WNBA,” Riley told the Coloradoan. “Pretty much from Wednesday through Sunday, we’ll be doing something like a sponsors’ event, the Read to Achieve program, Junior WNBA program and more.” Ruth and five other WNBA players spent Wednesday afternoon at Girls Incorporated of Metro Denver, where they met with 55 girls and demonstrated fitness basics that they hope will help the girls lead a healthy lifestyle. “It’s a super big week for them (NBA all-stars) and for us,” Riley said. “It should be a good time.”

While the weekend that culminated with the NBA All-Star Game on Sunday was all about the men’s league, another very important game took place on the afternoon of Monday, February 21. The NWBL held their All-Star game in front of a crowd of 2,549, with the West winning over the East, 91-82. Ruth was a member of the West team, representing the Colorado Chill. This is Ruth’s second season as a member of the Chill, which is based in Loveland, Colorado. Riley finished the game with five points and nine rebounds.

Thanks in large part to Ruth, the Chill lead the NWBL with an 11-3 record. Ruth is averaging 16.7 points, 10 rebounds, and 3.5 blocks per game. This season is only the Chill’s second in the league. The team made it to the NWDL title game last year, and Ruth hopes that the team can make a run for the championship once again when the playoffs start at the end of March.
