Overseas Update - February 24, 2009

Smith vs. Nolan? It was almost Katie Smith vs. Deanna Nolan. Almost.

The Shock’s all-everything guards were on opposite sides last week when Nolan’s UMMC Ekaterinburg squad twice defeated Fenerbahce Istanbul, whom Smith joined at the end of January. Smith did not play in either contest.

UMMC cruised to a 94-62 home victory over Fenerbahce on Feb. 17, but found things much tougher on the road three days later. Nolan knocked down two free throws and then the go-ahead layup on the next possession to give UMMC the lead for good with 3:39 left. The 70-68 victory propelled UMMC Ekaterinburg into the Euroleague Women’s Final Four. Nolan is averaging 7.7 points per game, 2.8 rebounds per game, 2.3 assists and 1.3 steals per game in Euroleage competition.

Plenette in Poland: Plenette Pierson has played in three games since joining the Polish Basketball League at the end of January. She is averaging 14.0 points, 3.7 rebounds and 2.3 steals per game for her Polish squad, CCC Polkowice.

Taj on the move: Taj McWilliams-Franklin, who left her team in Turkey to sign with Italy’s Famila Wuber Schio, has stayed plenty busy in 2009. In five games since Jan. 1, she is averaging 15.4 points, 7.2 rebounds and 2.6 steals per game.

Sanni’s stats up: Olayinka Sanni has been putting up significant numbers for her French squad, Cote d'Opale Basket Calais. The Shock’s 2008 draft pick has played in three games in the French Basketball League, averaging 13.8 points, 5.5 rebounds in 26 minutes per game since the New Year.

Shock reunion: Shock teammates Kelly Schumacher and Sheri Sam recently were reunited overseas when Sam joined Israeli squad Bnot Raanana Hasharon. Schumacher has played in all five games in 2009, averaging 14.3 points, 8.5 rebounds and 1.3 blocks in 29 minutes per game.
