Overseas Update - January 9, 2009

Taj McWilliams-Franklin is near the end of a busy week back from the holiday break. She scored nine points and grabbed nine rebounds in a low-scoring affair Wednesday to help Galatasaray defeat Shock teammate Alexis Hornbuckle and Besiktas, 59-51. Hornbuckle chipped in one rebound and one assist for Besiktas, which remains tied for first place in the Turkish Women’s Basketball League (TBBL) at 7-3. Only twice all winter will Shock teammates face each other in overseas play.

Earlier this week, McWilliams-Franklin was honored as a TBBL All-Star. She will play for the Foreign team in the 2009 All-Star Game, which will be played Saturday, Jan. 10, in Samsun, Turkey.

Many overseas leagues are still on holiday hiatus, including the Russian Superleague A, where Deanna Nolan and her team, UMMC Ekaterinberg, do not return to action until Jan. 15. In her last outing Dec. 22, the Shock All-Star guard had 16 points, five rebounds, two assists and three steals to help defeat Dynamo Moscow, 101-83, in a highly anticipated clash in the Russian capital.
