Minneapolis, MN - The adventure has begun again for recently acquired Shock guard Isabel Sanchez. Detroit Shock Head Coach and Director of Player Personnel, Bill Laimbeer, signed the 5’9” combo guard from Spain on July 2, 2004. Sanchez was on Detroit’s 2004 preseason roster before being released on May 18. She finished the 2004 preseason with averages of 2.5 points, 0.5 assists, 1.50 steals and 12.5 minutes in two games with the Shock. In seven professional seasons in Top Division Spain, Sanchez has averaged 13.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, 1.3 assists, 1.80 steals and 31.4 minutes in 200 games.
After being released by the Shock in mid May, Sanchez returned home to Spain with her family. However, when she received the surprising call from Laimbeer on July 2, 2004 that reinstated her as a member of the Shock team, she booked the first flight possible back to the states. Sanchez exclaimed, “I was happy to be given this second opportunity to play in the WNBA. I am really excited.” This past weekend was Sanchez’s first trip with her Shock teammates and the trip gave her an opportunity to re-visit with players that she had become familiar with in the pre-season and also re-adjust to life in America.
Sanchez indicated that lunch and dinner with teammates was a highlight of the Minnesota trip. She also mentioned that the team would hang out a lot and talk while on road trips. Surprisingly, no one on the team ventured to the worlds largest mall, The Mall Of America, while in Minneapolis. However, Sanchez did indicate that many of the players raved about the mall and Sanchez revealed that she would love to go to the mall in the future. So, next time you are in Minnesota, keep your eyes peeled for some super WNBA shoppers.
