Friday, May 16, 2008

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. –The Detroit Shock announce that Meijer, the Grand Rapids-based retailer is the presenting sponsor for the team for the 2008 and 2009 WNBA seasons.

The partnership agreement involves a number of marketing elements including the lock-up of the Meijer logo into the Shock’s logo and drops/logos in television, radio and print media.

Meijer will host eight Shock Days at selected locations throughout the state during the 2008 campaign. They will also sponsor a re-usable grocery bag giveaway during the Shock season as a way to help Shock fans protect the environment. Meijer will also be prominent on www.detroitshock.com.

In-arena, the Meijer logo will be incorporated into courtside signage, team bench chair-backs, PalaceVision features, signage and all Detroit Shock press conference and interview backdrops.

Meijer will also become heavily involved in the WNBA Fit community program through the Shock. The Fit program focuses on young women and encourages them to be successful by concentrating on being fit, being educated and having a healthy, positive self-esteem.

“All of us at Meijer are thrilled to partner with the Shock,” said Cathy Cooper, director of promotions and sponsorships for Meijer. “The Shock is a great organization, and our participation with the WNBA and the ‘Fit’ program is a wonderful connection to Meijer’s goal of providing healthy living initiatives for our customers.”

Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

“Recognizing that signing a seasonal presenting sponsor in the WNBA is a unique and high-profile event, we took the search very seriously,” said Detroit Shock Chief Operating Officer Craig Turnbull. “Aligning ourselves with Meijer, a Michigan-based corporation that has an excellent reputation in the state, is a leader in their industry and possess the core values that mirror our own, made this partnership a natural. We anticipate Meijer will be an integral part of everything that we do, both internally and as members of the Detroit community and are looking forward to a great 2008 season.”
