The Detroit Shock And Rock Financial Team Up For Annual March Of Dimes Walkathon

Auburn Hills, MI –The entire Detroit Shock training camp roster, along with Head Coach Bill Laimbeer and Assistant Coach Rick Mahorn, will team up with Rock Financial on Sunday, April 30 to take part in the March of Dimes Walkathon at the Troy Civic Center.

The Shock, taking part in their fourth March of Dimes Walkathon, will sign autographs, mingle with walkers and volunteers and man the two-mile marker as participants make their way through the eight-mile long course. In addition, two-time WNBA All-Star Swin Cash will join Rock Financial’s Wendy Kemp-Watkins on stage as pre-walk speakers leading up to the 9 a.m. start.

“At Rock Financial we are proud to support the March of Dimes, which does important work to ensure every baby has the best chance at a healthy life,” said David Hall of Rock Financial.

The Walkathon will also feature ShockFest promotional items and activities for children that include a moonwalk, basketball hoops and clowns. For dogs, there will be a canine corner at the start/finish area where pets can receive a goody bag. Popular Detroit personality Hugh Holesome will act as deejay for the day.

The money raised in WalkAmerica supports the research and programs to find out how to prevent premature births and local programs that give hope and help families who experience it. The March of Dimes is a national voluntary health agency whose mission is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality. Founded in 1938, the March of Dimes funds programs of research, community services, education, and advocacy to save babies and in 2003 launched a campaign to address the increasing rate of premature birth. The Shock will open their 2006 regular season on the road against three-time WNBA All-Star Tamika Catchings and the Indiana Fever at Conseco Fieldhouse on Saturday, May 20 at 6 p.m. The following Wednesday, May 24, Detroit will open the WNBA’s 10th Anniversary season on its home court as the Shock host the Minnesota Lynx at 7:30 p.m. at the Palace of Auburn Hills.
