Vacation By the Lake

When Detroit Shock guard Merlakia Jones was young, her mother gave her the nickname “Lake.” The name is fitting for the Florida grad, because when she isn’t spending time on the basketball court, Jones likes to spend her time relaxing in a warmer climate – preferably somewhere by the water. In fact, if Jones had unlimited time to spend and could travel anywhere in the world for her summer vacation, she would go to Hawaii.

When visiting the Aloha State, Jones said she would love to learn more about the culture because she finds it very intriguing. Aside from the beautiful yellow hibiscus flowers and the unique state bird the Nene, Jones would love to see the white sandy beaches that the island is famous for. She would like to travel there during the summer because the “sun always shines there.” While vacationing in Hawaii, the 5’10” guard would likely spend her time enjoying the sites and water sports.

“I enjoy the water,” Jones said. “I like swimming and a little bit of running.”

Although Hawaii is notorious for its monster waves, surfing is the one thing Jones can’t bring herself to try. “That’s too much water!” Jones laughs.

When Jones was younger, around 11 or 12 years old, the hot vacation spot for the Jones family was in Florida’s Panama City. This was one of her favorite and most special and memorable vacations because she got the opportunity to meet some cousins she had never met before.

“It was a fun event because it was a bunch of my family members and I can still remember it because we just had a great time,” Jones said. “It was like a family reunion.”

Another stop Jones likes to make while in Florida is to Cape Canaveral. This city is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean and Jones finds it to be as intriguing as Hawaii with hot spots like the John F. Kennedy Space Center, NASA and the Cape Canaveral Lighthouse. On vacation Jones not only enjoys her time in the sun and water, but she also enjoys investigating the local culture of Florida’s hot spots.
