Generation S - Chandi Jones
Happy Father’s Day from Detroit to Houston
Many high school seniors make the decision to attend college in an attempt to escape their mundane lifestyle at home and stray as far away from their hometown and parents as possible. However, for Shock guard Chandi Jones it was the opposite. Jones grew up in the small town of Bay City, Texas with her mother, Janice, and father, David. As a senior in high school Chandi was recruited heavily to play basketball at the likes of Texas, Tennessee, and Rutgers but she decided to stick close to home and attend the University of Houston. “I choose Houston because it was close to home and my parents,” said Jones.
Chandi became a standout point guard for the Cougar basketball team of which her father, David Jones, was the assistant coach. “This father/daughter connection on the court was a great thing because we had such a loving relationship,” shared Chandi, who was sent to Detroit via a draft day trade with Houston. Chandi speaks highly of her father and all of his support. “He was always there for me and was able to travel with me at Houston and I think it was a great experience for the both of us.”
Now Chandi is 1,500 miles away from her father and is not able to see him on a daily basis. However, the years she spent with her father in Bay City, Texas will never slip her mind. Chandi remembers riding around her small rural town with her father and spending a lot of her time with her dad. Other times the two friends would jump in the car for a half-an-hour before arriving at the nearest beach where they would hang out together and further develop their already strong relationship.
Chandi respects her father’s accomplishments and appreciates all that he has done for her. When asked to describe her father using three simple adjectives, Chandi replied with a smile, “funny, gentle, and talkative.” Chandi also mentioned if there was one thing that her dad has taught her to always follow it is, “whatever you do in life, do it 100 percent everyday, so that you will never have any regrets.”
Chandi will be unable to see her father this year on Father’s Day to recognize him for all that he has done because the team will be on road traveling from Sacramento to Detroit. However, if she were to see her father she would thank him for everything that he has done for her and continues to do to support her in her career as a guard for the Detroit Shock. “I’ll call my dad to wish him a happy Father’s Day,” said Chandi. “Even though I won’t see him he’s never far away from my heart.”
