Auburn Hills, MI - The Detroit Shock will open the 2009 home schedule versus the Los Angeles Sparks on Monday, June 8 (7:30 p.m.). Fans are being encouraged to arrive early because prior to tip-off, the team will recognize the 2008 WNBA Championship Season with the traditional championship banner raising and championship ring ceremony beginning at 7:00 p.m. at the Palace of Auburn Hills.

“The championship banner raising and ring ceremony is always a special event to commemorate our accomplishments during the 2008 WNBA season,” said Detroit Shock General Manager and Head Coach Bill Laimbeer. “We look forward to sharing the excitement with our fans as we kick off another great season here at The Palace.”

WNBA President Donna Orender will be on hand to present championship rings to all members of the 2008 WNBA Champion Shock team. Two special fans will participate in the championship celebration. Gary Galunas of Troy, Michigan and Kaye Kolbe of Green Bay, Wisconsin both won contests to be part of this special night. The 2008 Championship Banner will be raised to the rafters and will hang alongside the other five championship banners won by both the Detroit Pistons and Detroit Shock.
