The Detroit Shock will grab your attention when they’re on the court, but off the court they can stop traffic. This was apparent at the photo shoot for the Detroit Shock’s third-annual team calendar. The shoot took place May 12 and 13, 2005 at the Old Memories Ford Museum behind the Jerome-Duncan Ford Dealership in Sterling Heights, Michigan. The museum boasts an impressive collection of classic vehicles and was the perfect opportunity for players to have fun and express their own style.
“This is a good idea,” Shock forward Stacy Thomas said. “Everybody enjoys looking at cars. Why not pose in front of one?” Thomas got her picture taken sitting on an antique leather couch in front of two of the oldest cars in the museum: the 1924 Model T Depot Hack and the 1925 Model T Tank Truck.
Shock photographer Dan Lippitt personally matched each player with a car based on the player’s outfit and unique style. Shock rookie Kara Braxton was photographed behind the wheel of a 1950 Country Sedan. “Why’d I get a station wagon?” Kara Braxton joked when she was shown the car she would be posing with. “Is it because I have a son?”
The shoot was clearly a success because Lipitt and the players had a difficult time choosing which wonderful photographs to include in the calendar. The team had fun, but it might be enough modeling for some of them for a while. “I could never be a model,” Cheryl Ford said while posing in front of a sea green 1961 Falcon. She sure looked the part though.
Look for the calendar to be given to the first 3,000 fans at the Detroit Shock game on Friday, June 10th against the Charlotte Sting.
