POSTGAME QUOTES
Shock Head Coach Bill Laimbeer

On the game:
“That’s the bottom line. We didn’t show up early on in the game and didn’t want to win the game. We just went out and played the game and got beaten.”

On Cappie Pondexter:
“She made shots, especially. We had our best defender on her and she made the shots. If it was in the pick and roll we would have trapped it but it was more just one-on-one and making jump shots.”

Shock Forward Cheryl Ford

On Cappie Pondexter:
“She’s a great player, simple as that. Everything she put up went in. That’s what they do, run and gun.”

On the game:
“We were supposed to be giving them one shot. At halftime they shot 54%, they had thirteen second-chance points, we had turnovers, we got beat tonight.”

Mercury Head Coach Paul Westhead

On Cappie Pondexter:
“She was spectacular. I don't remember her missing and I had to look at the box score to see that she did have a few misses. I think I could take the hit for that because she played almost 38 minutes and I should have given her a little bit of a rest and she wouldn't have missed some at the end. She was just on fire.”

On her setting the scoring record for points by a rookie:
“I'm probably not the one to be impressed with that since I'm in the league with her together. She does reap the benefit of having Diana Taurasi out on the floor with her because Taurasi gets all the heat. She gets all the looks and everybody's out to get her but Pondexter is lethal. She can drain the three and she can take you on the drive. She can rebound it and put it back. What she can do a lot of people in our league haven't done a lot of, she can break you down off the dribble so even if you can defend her, she can break you down.”

On the game:
“I'm not surprised. For us, it was a very important game because we had a very tough loss on Sunday at home. Our team, without me saying it, had to come out and play very good basketball and hopefully come out and get a win. This is not the team that you want to come out and show up and get a win. We had to play very hard and our defense helped us tonight.”

Phoenix Guard Cappie Pondexter

On setting the scoring record:
“Oh really? I really don't think about stuff like that. We just needed the win and that's the bottom line. It feels good, it's a family in here so it's a good atmosphere in here.”

On snapping Detroit's home win streak:
“We weren't really focused on how well they were playing. We just dropped two (games) and we needed a win. Our focus was to come out on the road and win as many games as we possibly could.”

On feeling pressure when Taurasi got into foul trouble:
“No. We have enough players who can contribute. She's a great player, a great scorer. Everybody pitched in today. If we were having a bad shooting night and Taurasi fouled out and she was hitting everything that would be a different story.”

Phoenix Guard Diana Taurasi

On Pondexter's record:
“It's funny because I want to act surprised and shocked but I'm not. It's amazing what she does on the court and we needed a big performance by someone and she stepped right up. We don't look at Cappie like she's a rookie. She was held back in kindergarten so she's like 25, really. She's a vet. She had a heck of a game today.”

On handling Detroit at home:
“Yeah, they're probably one of the top three teams in the league hands down. They've got an amazing coach in Bill Laimbeer who stratagizes really well. It was a really big win for us today. Coach came in with a game plan and we executed it.”
