POSTGAME QUOTES
Shock Head Coach Bill Laimbeer

On his team’s performance:
“I thought that our lack of scrimmaging showed for us in the first half. It was not the prettiest for us offensively. But, overall, I was pleased with our defensive effort. We’re making progress but we have a ways to go. In the third quarter, we showed that if we put our minds to it offensively, we can really score.”

On the 25-0 run to open the third quarter:
“I’ve seen a couple of those in all of my years of basketball. I think that it was fueled by our defense. Our defense was outstanding and they missed some shots too which helped us. We got the rebounds and our offense clicked well.”

On the new rules (three quarters, 24-second clock):
“That didn’t bother us a bit. [The clock] does put a little more pressure on your offense. You have to get in your offense quicker, which we’re going to work on. We were a little slow doing that tonight. Four quarters? That’s irrelevant.”

Did you accomplish your goals for the game?
“Stay healthy was our number one goal along with timing on offense and effort. I wanted to see some effort tonight by our ladies and I thought it was good. I was pleased with it. Now we just have to fine-tune things.”

Shock Forward Cheryl Ford

How did you look for a first preseason game?
“Bill was pleased with the effort. We still have a lot to work on, but I think we did OK.”

On the 25-0 run:
“It was just a great start to the second half. A lot of it was defense. We’ve been working on our defense and said that defensive rebounds will win games. We worked on it in training camp and it worked today.”

Did the quarters and shot clock affect things?
“A lot of players go overseas and they know this system. It didn’t affect things much.”

Shock Forward Swin Cash

What do you get out of this game?
“The preseason is about working on things that you have to work on as a team. We’re trying to get our chemistry together. We’re trying to execute our plays. We’re implementing a new offense. The defense did a great job.”

On the lopsided win:
“For a preseason game, we don’t look at what the margin was like. We look at the effort and the effort was there from start to finish.”

Is it nice to be back in Connecticut?
“It’s always nice to be back in Connecticut.”

Sun Head Coach Mike Thibault

Opening Statement:
“That was an interesting second half. I thought we got a lot out of today. I don’t judge how we are or where we are by the score, if I did I would go for a long walk. I don’t think we are going to shoot 28 percent very often, especially when we have everybody. We had some people have tough shooting days who aren’t going to shoot that way as a normal rule. The only disappointing part probably was just figuring out some little things defensively that our younger players need to understand about playing against players of that caliber.”

On playing the Shock starters:
“It was great that we got to play against their starting team. We got a chance to play different combinations against their group to see who can play together, who doesn’t fit together, you know, all those things.”

Did you expect to play Erin Phillips that much?
“Yeah, she is in pretty good shape. The doctor said she was healthy, so you might as well go play. I thought it was pretty good the first time. She’s a little rusty and it’s hard. The jet lag is probably settling in right about now. I just thought there were some positives to take away from this game.”

Discuss the positives you saw from today’s game:
“The group that played that fourth quarter, despite what happened in the third quarter, kind of did a pretty good job as a group. I got a chance to see some people defend some of their better players. I was happy with that. I would like to think we could score more points, but we missed some pretty easy shots. I am not unhappy at all, when you play a game with no starters, it’s difficult.”

Sun Forward Donna Loffhagen

On playing together for the first time in a game:
“The more experience we have playing together the better we’ll play. We’ll get better. I don’t think we’ll shoot that badly again.”

On feeling comfortable on the court:
“I did. Once I got out there, I felt more confident just playing. It’s good to get that first game under my belt.”
